Recent news talks about the Google lifting the veil on its planned Chrome operating system. Computers powered by the software will become available later this year and may pose a threat to Microsoft, whose Windows software powers the vast majority of personal computers and most of the multi-tasking world including trading computers.

The new operating system, which is obviously tied to Google's Web browser, also named Chrome is not trying to be a better version of Windows. Instead, it is aiming to shift users toward its vision of "cloud computing," a model in which programs are not installed on a PC but rather are used over the Internet and accessed through a Web browser. In Google land, a user's data will also reside on servers across the Internet, rather than their PC. Already most PC users rely on cloud computing, using their Internet browsers to access things like e-mail, photo albums and digital maps.

Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at net-books. Google already talking to partners about the project and plan to make it available to consumer's in the second half of 2010.

Google demonstrated an early version of the Chrome operating system on a net-book during a news conference at its Mountain View headquarters. The Chrome desktop looked similar to the Chrome browser. Using application tabs, which are meant to run the programs people use most, like e-mail or calendar software.

Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS. Designed to be lightweight and fast enough to get you on the web in seconds. Figuring that most of what people experience takes place on the web, Google has gone back to the basics and completely redesigned the underlying security architecture of the OS so that users don't have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates.

A net-book using the operating system booted in seven seconds, and Google said it was working to make the start-up time even faster, however they we're reluctant to share information regarding which hardware makers were planning to build machines that used the operating system, but said it would work closely with manufacturers.

Google is pushing to make net-books that are slightly larger than today's models and include full-size keyboards. I imagine this could become a rival to the ipad and the OX as well. Let's see!

Some of us are easily dazzled by technology and for Farhad Manjoo, (Writer for The New York Times) a trip to Google's sprawling headquarters in Mountain View, California was "a delirious experience" he says. In one article he mentions seeing a replica of SpaceShipOne, computerized toilets, and solar-cell-covered parking lots. However what caught his attention the most was what he referred to as "pedestrian" programmers' desks, and more specifically their computer monitors.

After meeting several Gmail software engineers, he discovered each sported a spectacular configuration of screens. Based in many different configurations e.g. pairing wide monitors with tall ones, huge screens married to small ones, and several displays in a series. He said the impression was "in addition to building a Web-based e-mail system, they were helping Norad keep tabs on the nations airspace."

For years now, we've all seen the multi-monitor displays in movies, on TV, and even in the real world. The many studies by specialists in human-computer interaction suggest that combining multiple displays can significantly enhance your productivity. The theory simply being that the bigger your display, the more of your work you'll be able to see and the more you'll be moved to do.

Global electronics company NEC, and researchers from the University of Utah conducted a study of office workers who regularly perform several common tasks. The only difference was they used various monitor configurations. The results clearly showed that people who used 20-inch dual monitors were 44% more productive at certain text-editing operations than people using a single monitor.

It wasn't long ago that multi-monitor displays were reserved for stock brokers, film editors, and Google engineers, but not so much for the average Joe in the office. However, prices on LCD panels plummeted by almost a third and continued falling thru 2009, making getting that dream desktop more feasible.

With that in mind Farhad decided to set forth upon a personal quest for multiple monitor Zen, so he got his hands on several displays and paired them up in every way possible.

First he tried using two 22-inch Dell wide-screen monitors side by side, creating one very wide screen that measured roughly 38 inches diagonally. Then, he rotated each display so that its long side ran vertically which allowed him to read a full document on the screen without scrolling. He said he even copied a style he saw at Google when he placed one screen vertically and the other horizontally- basically forming the letter T as if on its side with the wide screen used for working with side-by-side windows, and the tall screen for focusing on a single, long document.

He also tried a couple configurations with his laptop including one wide monitor and one tall monitor. He said to have found the "Cadillac Escalade of displays" when he combined an enormous 30-inch wide screen monitor to the equation, and confirmed the researchers' findings.

As office workers, we all know getting things done on the Internet can be very distracting, for even the best of wills. A typical desktop monitor 19-inch diagonal is really only the Honda Civic of displays. The world wide web is generally a wormhole that routinely pull us off track. Switching thru browser windows each time we look something up, but as soon as you do so, all traces of previous work will disappear from the screen and we forget about the original tasks at hand, and falling into a deep browsing trance, and wake up wondering how in the world you ended up on some other topic having nothing at all to do with your work.

Farhads notes can sit on one side of his dual screen while his Word document sit ont the other and he says when he focuses on one program he doesn't lose his place in the other.

All in all Farhad found that two 22-inch monitors, one placed vertically and the other horizontally, was a much more cost-effective way to bolster his productivity, than adding a 30" monitor.

One should note however in order to run this setup, you'll need a computer with dual monitor capabilities. This is achieved with a multi-head video card that can be installed or by using a multi-monitor adapter.

Set to launch in June, the cloud gaming service OnLive, a new gaming service that will allow people to "stream" popular games like "Assassin's Creed II" over the Internet. This new system is said to work much like watching TV shows or listening to music online.

OnLive will be available to Mac and PC users via a browser plug-in that will let you play games hosted from OnLive's servers. This is what's becoming commonly known as "cloud computing." That also means that players can buy or rent games with older, less powerful computers, without having to purchase a console such as Xbox or PS3.

OnLive also promises to release a "MicroConsole" device, which will let you play games on your TV, later this year. Along with other devices added subsequently, OnLive also will be allowing multi-player user ability on all the game platforms. Making it easier to get your gaming party started.

Steve Perlman founder and CEO said "We want to slow the impact of people jumping on to our servers just a little bit."

The "MicroConsole" -launching later this year, will be a inexpensive, cassette-sized adapter that plugs into a TV set to stream games. OnLive expects to see the tiny console to be more popular than its PC and Mac streaming service.

In addition to the perks of not having to actually have hardware and software, OnLive is a service: like other online gaming services, you'll get gamer tags, profiles, the ability to make friends, and chat-but the kicker is that all of this is done via live video.

Many people are asking whether the company's servers and players' broadband connections would be able to handle streaming without a lag that would disrupt playing with pauses and glitches. Perlman said it's working, and "assuming you have a decent Internet connection," gamers who've been testing the service are "playing normally."

With Youtube and tons of other Flash based videos, it may be easy to assume that streaming video games would be the next big thing. However, streaming video games is a bigger challenge than music and movies, because games cannot be easily compressed into smaller files before streaming over the Internet. Here's a question. Ever launch Excel or Internet Explorer and have to wait a whole half a minute or even up to a minute for the program to open and become usable? Sometimes when you close your browser, does a window on your computers monitor appear saying that "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem," and asks you to "send error report?" Your computer may even run fine outside of this, however if your programs are taking a long time to open, then it may be because your system does not have adequate amounts of RAM.

RAM stands for Random Access Memory and is used as a temporary storage place for memory by your computer. This memory is in use when tasks are being executed by different programs. Therefore, you should have enough RAM memory to process all the tasks you would be requiring of the computer at hand. If you don't have enough RAM it will cause a major slowdown of your computer while it is booting up or even just regular processing tasks.

Anything less than 1GB of RAM is not enough nowadays for basic operations. Check and see how much RAM you have by clicking Start, then right-click over "My Computer" and selecting "Properties" from the drop-down menu. Sometimes it can take a moment for the page to populate and once it does, it will tell you how much RAM you have installed on that computer.

Increasing RAM is relatively inexpensive however, please note that RAM is not a universal in its compatibility, so before buying, you need to know what kind of RAM you computer uses. Installing the wrong RAM can lead to several different problems all together.

When considering an increase in RAM on your computer, keep in mind that you are adding a physical piece of hardware to the computer. Be sure you understand that there are some risks involved if you don't perform due diligence in understanding the RAM requirements of your motherboard.

Find out what the maximum amount of RAM that you can install in your computer. This can generally be easily found at your computer manufacturer's website. Look up the speed and type of RAM you need for your computer so that you know what memory chips are supported by your motherboard. SIMMs (Single Inline Memory Modules) or DIMMs (Dual In-Line Memory Modules). Also while on the PC manufacturer's website find out how many slots you have for additional RAM.

Getting to your RAM in a typical desktop computer is a moderately easy task. Unplug the power cord from the back of your computer. Open the case as shown in your computer manual. In most cases you don't even need the manual to show you how to do this. It is generally a simple matter of unscrewing one or two screws on the back or bottom of the computer and exposing the computer's motherboard.

Locate your RAM slots. If all of your memory banks are full, you may need to replace your RAM rather than just install more.

To remove old RAM press apart the securing clips on both ends of the RAM slot, and the module will pop up slightly. Lift the RAM module straight up and out of the memory slot.

To install the new RAM line up the notched edge of the RAM module with the tab on the bottom of the RAM slot. The RAM only fits if you line it up correctly so you don't have to worry putting it in backwards. Press straight down on the module, applying firm but gentle pressure on both ends until it clicks in place, and the securing clips will snap into place.

Replace your computers cover and reattach the power cords and cables. Power up the computer and the system should automatically recognize the new memory.

You should be good to go. Four Monitors or The Big One?

Ok we have to admit that the giant 30-inch computer monitors seen in stores are somewhat lust worthy.

Just imagine what you could do with all that screen real estate, and all those pixels! Wait hold it right there--those giant displays aren't necessarily all they're cracked up to be. Let's take a closer look and reconsider a few things.

One thing to consider right off the bat is price. They're expensive considering the mere functionality. You could spend from $1300 to $2500 for a single 30-inch monitor. For example the NEC MultiSync LCD sells for more than $2000 which may not weigh out in terms of price over functionality.

Even though some monitors may have high resolution (typically 2560 X 1600 pixels), which can give you a good amount of detail. On the other hand, they're also so wide that the distance from your eyes to the screen varies. This is happens when your sitting 24 inches from the center of the screen, then you're 28 inches or more from the corners. That may not sound like a whole lot, but if you're working in front of a monitor all day, you could develop eye fatigue from constantly having to adjust your focus closer or farther as you look around the screen. It would work out better if the monitor was curved, keeping your eyes at a consistent distance from the display as you do your work.

Something else to consider would be practicality.

If you have a gigantic screen, then you have a single, vast, wide open unstructured desktop. Sure that's great if your editing large, HD images, or things of that nature. However if your the common foe who depend on PCs to work with a bunch of different types of information e.g. Web Browsers, Word Processors, Spreadsheets, Emails, and all at the same time. Try using all of that on a giant monitor and you may very well drown in an abyss of cluttered desktop madness. Having to drag and drop, and stretch and constantly adjust the windows manually.

Now hear this.

There's an alternative! Instead of one big screen, use four smaller ones! It's actually rather almost as easy to get a nice quad monitor display up and going. How to Resurrect a Crashed Hard Drive

The hard drive is possibly the most failure prone part of your computer. Whether it's been dropped, over heated, or simply died of old age. If you've traced your problem to the hard drive, the solution depends on the symptoms it's exhibiting.

If the drive spins up but behaves erratically, you probably have data corruption caused by a failing drive. Try the following steps to recover your data and copy it to a good drive before the bad one dies.

Check cabling.

Before anything else, if you're using an IDE drive, check that the data cable is connected properly, and if it is, switch to a new cable. IDE cable are notoriously cheap and are prone to having their insulation stripped by the metal edges inside the PCs case shorting out the cable.

Try a boot Disc

Try starting your machine with a boot disc such as Ultimate Boot CD for Windows to learn if the drive is readable. If it is, back up all of the data to another drive, and reformat the original discs to see if it's salvageable.

Check for bad sectors

You may have bad sectors. Try using HDD Re-generator to locate any. Download the demo and burn it to a boot able CD. If the free demo finds bad sectors, it may be worth paying for the full version, if it can recover the bad sectors and make the drive usable once more.

Try Utilities from disk's manufacturer

TackTech.com features manufacturer specific utilities for virtually any hard drive vendor. Find outwhat company made the drive that's failing, then download the appropriate diagnostic application. All of the tools are free and can help diagnose problems on the drive and repair them.

Try Data Recovery Software

Some Last Ditch Efforts

If the Hard Drive won't spin up at all, you can still try a few last at jabs that have only a slim chance of working. For example don't bang on the drive, and don't remove the cover and expose the heads.

Try the Freezer Trick

The freezer trick is an old standby if you have a drive that's clicking but not spinning. Put the drive in a plastic freezer bag to keep the water out, and wrap it in a towel for extra protection, and then freeze it for a few hours. Let it thaw back to room temperature after you remove and get rid of any condensation you can see. There's no agreed upon length of time to freeze it so start with an hour and work your way up to 24 hours and see if you can make that drive spin up one last time.

Try to Loosen Stuck Drives

To loosen stuck discs, hold the drive in your hand and rotate your arm outward quickly, parallel to the orientation to the plats, a bit like throwing a Frisbee. Repeat this action several times but make sure to not to bang the disc on anything. This action is designed to solve a problem called stiction or static friction, which can prevent drive platters from spinning.

Apply a High-Wattage Power Burst

Finally you can try attaching the drive to a high wattage power supply. Even though it wont draw up extra power, a burst of juice from the highest wattage power supply you can find, could jar it into spinning up one last time.

Copy All Your Files

Remember if you do get a dead drive spinning again, don't let it stop until you've copied off all your critical data. Chances are, you wont have it working again.

If all else fails and you absolutely need data off the hard drive, your last best hope is to send it to a data recovery service like Drivesavers. It isn't cheap and expect to pay up to $3000, but they can perform magic when consumer grade tools fail.

Data thieves don't have to be programming wizards to get their hands on your personal information. They often find hard drives that contain financial and other sensitive data at flea markets, charity shops, city dumbs, and even on eBay. Trading computers can contain a lot of financial information that should be protected.

These tips will help you render an old drives files unreadable.

Reformatting a drive and deleting its partition doesn't truly erase it's files. Putting files into windows recycle bin makes them unreadable by the operating system, but they're still viewable to anyone using data recovery. That's why a dedicated drive erasing tool is a must.

A reliable way to destroy old data is to use a block eraser utility such as DBAN, which overrides each block on your hard drive several times, and can create either a boot-able floppy disc or an ISO file you can burn to a CD. Once you boot from a start up disc just a few key strokes can begin blowing away your data.

The secure erase utility uses the disc drive secure erase command that's built into every modern hard drives firmware. The wipe is incredibly fast. Secure erase can do the whole job in about half the time that a block eraser could take. Especially if you already have a multi display.

Some government agencies use huge grinders to shred their discarded drives into tiny bits. Some folks chop their old drives with an ax or drive nails through them. You may not have to go through such extremes though, however a few whacks with a sledge hammer can do wonders for your peace of mind and may even reduce a little stress. Make sure you know how to use such tools safely and remember to use safety goggles.

To use Windows XP Pros built in encryption, you have to log on to a password protected account. So you can select all the folders on the C drive except the Windows folder and encrypt everything inside.

Windows XP creates a unique encryption key automatically if you use this feature. If you wipe your installation of Windows which includes you encryption keys, neither you nor anyone else will be able to decrypt those files. However if you choose to encrypt you files this way you should still run a secure erase tool to be absolutely certain to ensure your privacy.

So if your one of the happy folks that are just getting started on the multiple monitor concept, then there are a few basic tips you're going to want to know about. Whether you purchased a multiple monitor ready computer, installed a dual monitor video card or two, or simply used a dual monitor adapter, you're going to want to know how to make the most of your situation.

In this section we're going to focus on how to extend the task bar across multiple monitors.

We know that it's easy to move your Windows task-bar from one monitor to another. First make sure to (right click on taskbar)
uncheck the "Lock the Taskbar" and then just click and drag it to any side of either monitor to make it stay. You will soon learn that you don't want to have to scoot your mouse pointer over to the monitor where your taskbar is residing, several monitors over, which could be some distance if you have more than a dual monitor setup.

Get a multi monitor software that will extend your task-bar across all screens.

A very popular dual monitor softwareand easy to use utility that's also free to download, is called UltraMon. The "smart Taskbar" feature adds an additional taskbar for each secondary monitor, and each taskbar only shows tasks from the computer monitor it is on. This can be very effective in managing lots of open applications much easier, and when activating an application, you'll know on which monitor it will appear.

If you've just added a couple dual monitor video cards to your PC and you already have a computer monitor, I suggest buying matching monitors. Four monitors of the same make and model would eliminate annoying differences in color, brightness, and balance. As a minimum, they should be of the same size and resolution. In order to give yourself the most flexibility in the connections, be sure to get monitors that have both the VGA and DVI capabilities. • Multi Tasking needs flow, in order to be productive. As a smart business owner would say, “time is money.” That being said, it’s only wise to value time, and time spent over viewing process and production. Advantages to having a Dual Monitor display is twice that of a single monitor system. The first time I added an additional monitor to my pc, giving it Dual Screens

displaying my favorite sites in their respected entirety, I learned quickly that separate screens give you individual workspace for multiple applications. That can be crucial to overall productivity time. Multi-Screens and/or Multi-Monitors literally multiplied my productivity.

• Viewing a multi-monitor set up is going to give you more workable resolution. Some programs/windows may have conflicting resolutions when trying to view multiple applications on a single monitor. With a Multi-Monitor Display

arranging all my windows relieved me from the daunting task of toggling through applications by means of minimizing and maximizing each tab or window. Remembering back when I originally switched to a dual monitor setup to gain efficiency online, I know I'll never go back. The productivity benefits came not only in apparent gains but actually relieved stress and tension associated with my increasing frustration. Frustration that stemmed from the "single monitor blues." O f course I have written about how easy it is to setup a multiple monitor system including but not limited to adding a dual monitor video card, to using a dual monitor adapter. So we already know how easy it is to create multiple monitor displays. Now we're going to look at how to make the most of your multiple monitor setup. Here are 5 tips on efficiency using dual screen monitors that have worked for me. If you have a multi screen computer these tips will benefit you as well but to keep it simple this blog will address dual monitor backgrounds.

Relax Browser Tension.

In the days of the "single monitor blues" we can and often do fall into the trap of using one browser at a time and collecting tons of open tabs. That can increase crashing and slow PC performance way down. With dual monitors you can keep your Firefox open on the left screen and say Google Crome open on the right. Evidently Crome is well known for running applications and pages in tabs in such a manner that if one of the tabs go down, the other remaining tabs will stay intact, unlike the ole IE. However, we can say that Crome doesn't have (yet) the available customizing features and huge array of extensions than that of Firefox. So to maintain "Maximum Up-time Efficiency" use a browser like Firefox for apps that use your favorite extensions, and Crome for the tab browsing and so forth.

Mighty Mouse Power.

Eventhough a lowly name such as mouse conjures up the idea of a small thing to be shooed away, the mouse proves to be a significant force waiting to be harnessed. I'll give you some ideas here to make possibly the smallest deveice do some of the larger work.

1) Open a new tab in your browser by clicking on your scroll wheel once over a link.

2) Increase the size of your text in a document by holding the Ctrl key down and lightly move your mouses scroll wheel down. The text will increase in size. Hold the Crtl key down and move the scroll wheel up and the text returns to it's normal size.

3) Instantly Select Lines of Text and paragraphs by using multiple mouse clicks. Highlight on a word with two quick clicks of a button, or scoop up the entire sentence with three quick clicks. If your in a word-pad document you can put the cursor in the middle of the paragraph, and click it three times and it will select the whole paragraph. Hit the delete button if want to see the quickest way to eject a whole paragraph.

Organize Your Desktop.

I use a bunch of different software applications, so my desktop can get cluttered very quickly. Having at dual monitor desktop can give you a place to separate operating system utilities from browser specific applications. This will also free up time used to find a shortcut in a sea of many, much like a diamond in a haystack.

Use Keyword Shortcuts.

Learning how to manipulate the keyboard and the mouse at the same time has been one of the most underrated (and least used) features of the system. Keyboard shortcuts are skills we can all use and they serve a helpful purpose when they can be recalled quickly. Here, I will remind you of some neat little shortcut tips to give you more time to do other things.

1) Quickly Access the Start Menu: hit either of the two those infamous "Windows" keys located on both sides of the space-bar.

2) Quickly get to your System Properties: Windows key+Pause/Break instead of going through that whole process of "My Computer" and so on.

3) Quickly Lock your System: Need to step away from your PC without hesitation but don't want to leave your work to sneaky eyes? Use this Keyboard Shortcut: Windows key+L

4) When you need to access the Utility Manager try this handy Keyboard Shortcut: Windows key+U

5) Toggle through different open programs without the old minimizing and maximizing with this easy Keyboard Shortcut: Alt+Tab

Let the PC Rest.

Many times when our PC gets congested we can generally shut the system down and restart to a fresh rested computer. To minimize productivity loss from these types of CPU brain-farts, shut down your computer when not in use. Turn it back on while your preparing to get into your state and let your PC get into it's state. This will help your PC be free from the many side dumps of data we typically go through throughout the day, and can help prevent your computer from freezing up when its had enough.

New Multiple Monitor Owner Professes Love at 1st byte!

I recently purchased a new computer from multi-monitors.com, which is the home of the computer brand, Super PC. I have been eyeing one of their multi-monitor displays for some time now as I do a lot of multi-tasking on my day trading computer i.e., multi-tabling poker play, video gaming, and I enjoy having the extra work space on my multiple monitors so I am not constantly switching back and forth from window to window on the task-bar. I purchased their Nuclear Workstation Computer. The one I purchased supports up to 6 monitors and is a beauty of a machine.

I had several questions in regards to technology specifications as I wasn't completely versed in the extensive requirements for multi-monitor capabilities. After reviewing the site for a while and reading their FAQ I had specific additional questions for the configuration of my new PC. Dan at customer service was very quick responding to my email inquiry and was very courteous and knowledgeable. Together we were able to help narrow
down my choices for the type of specs I wanted and from there I made my purchase.

When I made my purchase I was quoted a build and shipping time of 2-3 business days and unlike some other larger PC manufactures (who I won’t name in this review) I actually received a shipping confirmation within the estimated time frame. I received my multiple monitor computer in perfect working order, in professional packing which impressed me very much. I had no problem setting everything up correctly

Frequently I use Microsoft Excel to render records of various projects. Having a multiple monitor computer definitely helps. Often times I'll compare two Excel spreadsheets side by side so that I can stay on top of things row to row. Using dual computer monitors, I'll put a spreadsheet on each computer monitor.

At first, I couldn't get the spreadsheets to display seperately, on serperate screens, eventhough they appeared as seperate windows in my taskbar. It took me a little while but after a few minutes, I found how to command Excel to open each document as a seperate window or instance of the Excel application.

There are several different ways you can view Excel in a multi-screen format. You can start by having the Excel program open on one display, and the documents you are comparing on another display.

Maximize Excel to spread across multiple monitors. This application would work well if you had a very large spreadsheet that is hard to view on a single monitor. Stretching the spreadsheet across dual screen monitors will help you see the whole spreadsheet without having to toggle back and forth.

Automatically position and maximize each speadsheet in its own display.

If you have two documents open simultaneously on Excel, click the "Window" button and the "Compare Side By Side" should automatically appear. This will automatically position each spreadsheet in its own display. This particular trick only works for two documents though.

Now for the real glory booster,

all you need to do is open each Excel document in it's own window seperately. This way you can utilize your multi monitor setup to it's fullest capabilities. To do this simply hold the "Shift" button down when you click on the Excel Shortcut and it will open independently of any other Excel windows previously opened.

The basic concepts related to the various types of multiple-adapter configurations are not new or specific to Windows Vista, but are important to understand in relation to the design of the multi-adapter feature in Windows Vista.

Get a different feel using a Multiple Monitor display on Vista than with it's predecessor Windows XP.

Although the functionality is the same for the most part, you'll notice something is slightly different.

For example, when using the XP operating system, it was rather easy to install different dual monitor video cards from different manufacturers on the same multiple monitor system. This was typically done by installing a high-end graphics card from one company, placing it in the primary PCI Express slot, and also having a lower-end standard PCI video card (possibly from a different manufacturer) powering peripheral displays. Even Though these two cards which can be completely different using two different "display drivers" (the software that tells Windows how to use the graphics card,) this configuration could still work in the Windows XP operating system.

Microsoft has been known however, for claims that having multiple monitor VGA drivers in Windows XP often causes stability crisis.

So in an attempt to resolve this issue, Windows Vista requires that all installed graphics cards use the same display drivers in order to perform efficiently and stable. The drawback to such events, is that all graphics cards installed on a dual monitor setup or higher should be from the same manufacturer, and not from different companies. For example, no mix matching Nvidia dual monitor video cards with ATI cards.

If for some reason you would want to continue using outdated hardware but wanted to upgrade to Vista (if that's possible)

you can use a legacy XP driver (XPDM driver) with your existing graphics hardware. However you must be forewarned that some options in the Vista such as, but not limited to, advanced 3D rendering options to your computer monitors. You can also use a dual monitor adapter to.

If you never tried multiple monitors and you have resources to get another monitor, maybe a dual monitor video card, I say GO FOR IT! "The only thing to fear is fear itself." Or so they say.

However there is just thing that might not be as heart-warming as seeing little daughters birthday party photo, on the dual monitor wallpaper. That is the fact that for those of us who use Windows (and I'm fairly positive about Macs too) might need to use some type of dual monitor software to get the over all experience. Two of the best features, I think, is the Taskbar Extender, and the ability to stretch a quicktime video across dual screen monitors and not loose any picture quality. In fact it sometimes gains picture quality to make one big screen. With the Taskbar Extender, the once ordinary windows single monitor taskbar extends across multi screens and displays the application in the monitor its on. That's better than having to always go back to the main monitor to find a application , usually among many others, in the taskbar.

One thing is for sure. This little program compliments my multiple monitor computer and helps me to be more efficient while using it. After all, with all the time spent on the computer shouldn't we make best of the time?

In today's multi tasking computing world, it's not unusual to see people constantly switching from window to window trying to get data transferred from one application to another. You've probably noticed that everywhere you looks these days you hear something about going green. Whether it be in the news, politics, fashion, and even technology, as well as a Planet Green TV network, you can hardly escape the growing pressure to relieve some of the carbon footprint that we all tend to leave behind.

That may be all great and dandy in the eyes of those tree loving people who so heroically take on the world upon their shoulders. Lets take in to consideration some thoughts on sufficient use, or lack of, our time. Our daily schedule is filled with a vast field of chores, things to do, acts of honor, and wishful thinking. Multi monitor configurations are poised to become the new standard in the workplace.”

By enabling users to work between multiple applications and resolving the need to view and process a multitude of information sources simultaneously, multiple monitor configurations allow users to move and size a variety of information and images across any or all screens to increase productivity. Overall respondents in the study were 10 percent more productive using multiple monitor set ups.

Multi monitors can impact a company’s ROI, when considering the value of errorless work. The study results show that respondents increased their errorless production by 18 percent using multi-screen configurations.

Additionally, multi-monitor configurations can positively impact employee morale, making users feel more comfortable with their ability to complete tasks by allowing for quick navigation and higher task focus. Participants in the study considered multi-screen configurations significantly more useful than single screens and preferred multiple monitor setups on every measure of usability. They found them 29 percent more effective for tasks, 24 percent more comfortable to use in tasks and found it 39 percent easier to move around sources of information.

So, with that being said, I think it's a pretty good bet that if you got a dual monitor video card or a dual monitor adapter, not only would you enjoy the dual monitor wall paper without dual monitor software, but you will also gain more productivity than you ever imagined. Having a dual monitor setup once changed my life. Second only to the multi monitor setup I currently have. Although my multiple monitor computer can support a quad monitor display, I am looking forward to having six monitors possibly eight!

Considering the purchase of a multiple monitor computer system? I am often asked, “What’s the greatest benefit of a multi-monitor computer system?” Since investing in my 8 screen system a little over 2 years ago, I can say with avid assurance that my productivity has grown tremendously. With the invention of the LCD monitor (replacing those bulky and somewhat hazardous CRT monitors), I’m not the only one fond of having 8 monitors on my desktop. In this article, I’m going to demonstrate how using a multiple monitor computer system will improve your productivity.

If you’re like me, you always have half a dozen projects to work on. The ability to start and stop a project without maximizing and minimizing windows, or getting lost in your workspace, is essential. Only six months after I bought my first dual screen system, I was so impressed by the increase in my own productivity that I purchased multi-monitor computers for over half of my office. Within the last 18 months, the systems have paid for themselves many times over because my employees and I are able to accomplish more. I can honestly say this is due to our ability to multi-task, afforded by our multi-monitors. Our everyday tasks such as web editing, writing, marketing, and finances have become less burdensome.

We’re certainly not the first to take advantage of this technology. In 2002, as these types of multi-screen systems were making their way into the skyline offices, an informal study was conducted at Northrop Grumman. Each of their developers was given at least dual monitors. The biggest complaint was desk space, since all of our monitors were CRTs (no LCDs).”

Each passing year these productivity numbers will increase. Why? Because as mentioned above, they were using old CRT monitors, meaning space was a limiting factor. Moreover, even programmers would have been hard pressed to find a CPU running faster than 1 GHz. That’s not much firing power for bulky applications. We’ve come a long way since then, and now it’d be difficult to find multiple monitors with less than quadruple the power of their machines. Even though the technology is growing exponentially, prices are actually staying about the same. If you factor in inflation over the past few years, they are slightly less.

Efficient multi-tasking remains possible because of technology’s ability to adapt to increased workloads. Understanding of these adaptations allows my business to enjoy both decreased waste and a higher volume of output. I multitask all day and I'm not using "multitask" in that buzz-term kind of way either. Between all the many, instant messages, and news updates, it seems like I need one computer for communications and another computer for work. I run several different applications simultaneously and constantly switch among them.
At times, I'm testing an application while taking notes in Microsoft Word. Other times, I'm instant messaging with a friend about a Web page or running Virtual PC to test a procedure in a book I'm editing. Often I'm doing all those things simultaneously. It seems like I waste half the day clicking the taskbar to switch between tasks.
Turns out I didn't need another computer—I just needed another monitor. Windows XP supports using multiple monitors and has the multi-screen feature built in. Dual monitors lets you add a separate monitor to your laptop and view different programs on each display.
In this column, I'll explain how to configure multiple monitors using the Dual screen feature in Windows XP. And I'll help you set up an old laptop as a second monitor by using some cool third-party software that works with Windows XP.
Configure Multi-Monitor and Dualview
If you have a desktop computer and you want multi-screens, your best bet is to buy an external monitor and a second video adapter that supports multiple monitor displays. Here's a list of Supported Display Adapters for Multiple Monitor Display and Dual Monitors. Alternatively, you can upgrade your current video adapter with an adapter that can connect directly to multiple monitors. You can find such video adapters for less than $200 at most electronics stores—just make sure that it's compatible with your computer and has connectors that match the monitors you plan to use.
If you're a laptop user like me, you don't have the option of adding another video adapter, but your laptop might support using Dual Display with an external monitor and the laptop's built-in display. If it does support Dualview, just do what I did: plug a monitor into the external VGA port of your laptop and turn on the Dualview feature of Windows XP. To turn on Dualview, follow these steps:
1.
Right-click the desktop, and then click Properties.
2.
In the DisplayProperties dialog box, click the Settings tab.
3.
Click the Display list and select your external monitor. If you do not see multiple monitors listed, your computer hardware may not support Dualview. You can still use MaxiVista to configure a second computer as an additional display, however.
4.
Select the Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor option. Click Apply or OK.
Now I can have different windows open on my laptop's built-in display and the external monitor. I can move windows between the two displays and even stretch windows across both displays. The whole process should only take the everyday novice only a few minutes to get you out of the stone age of single monitor computing and into the now with Multiple Monitor Displays. This is a very efficient way to get that Dual Monitor Setup, and once you try it, you’ll never want to go back to one monitor again, I guarantee it. Instead you may be on the search for the most accessible Dual Monitor Video Card or at least a Dual Monitor Adapter to satisfy your new found productivity multiplier.

You can just continue to read through the article and/or if something doesn’t make sense, just watch the video below for a clear demonstration with instructions on how to enable Multiple Monitors on your computer, but will most likely (but not absolutely) need at least one if not more Multi Monitor Video Card.

Windows XP Users:

As a side note, you should be aware that in a Multi Monitor Setup one of the monitorswill serve as the primary monitor which will display the login dialog upon start up of your pc. Most all of the items you open will default to the primary monitor. One of the greatest things is that you can actually select completely different resolutions for each screen as well as adjust the color settings individually. To connect up your Multiple Monitor System you will need additional video outlets or one (or more) of the easy to use and truly a no brain-er "so easy a caveman can do it" Multi-Monitor Adapters offered by the company that brings us the productivity machine that is gaining steam as an authority and known worldwide as Super PC. It's the type of simple yet dependable Multiple Monitor video adapter that will allow you to take full advantage of the awesome productivity gains you would expect to get when using a Multi-Screen solution without the daunting need to install expensive, over-rated, over-priced, off the chain and unnecessary multiple monitor software.

Configuration Step: Here we go!

1) Go to START -> CONTROL PANEL

2) Select APPEARANCE AND THEMES -> DISPAY

3) Select the SETTINGS TAB and click IDENTIFY which will display a large number on each of the monitors. This shows which monitor is going to correspond with each icon.

4) Click the icons and drag them to the real world position in which the monitors are set up.
Click APPLY or OK

That’s almost just about it, your screen will most likely flash and Windows may ask you if you’d like to keep the settings and if all is well and everything looks good, then go ahead and hit OK. Viola! You now have a Multi Screen / Multi Monitors to work with. Enjoy!

To change the primary monitor in Windows XP you can do the following:

Steps:

1) In SETTINGS TAB of the Display Properties Dialog box, click once on the monitor icon that you would like to make the primary monitor.

2) Click to select the USE THIS DEVICE AS PRIMARY MONITOR check box. This box will not be available if you select the monitor that is already your primary monitor.

Windows Vista Users

Note: Windows Vista is designed to be a little more user friendly. When I plug in my additional monitor, Windows automatically sets it up for me, MOST OF THE TIME. So, I’ve included these directions for the times when Windows is unable to set up your monitor on its own. Also, as mentioned above, I’ve included a short video for the Vista setup, just in case you have trouble finding anything.

Configuration Step:

1) Go to the START button (actually, it’s the circular Window logo in the bottom left hand corner of the screen on most Vista desktops.)

2) Select CONTROL PANEL from the right hand column.

3) If you are in Classic View, then select CONTROL PANEL HOME.

4) Under the Appearance and Personalization, click ADJUST SCREEN RESOLUTION

5) Now you should see two or more black boxes if you’ve already connected your additional monitor. The icons are representations of the real world position of your monitors. You can drag and drop the icons so that they accurately represent where your multiple monitors are located on your desk.

6) Now select the additional monitor by click the icon and make sure the check box below that says, "Extend the desktop onto this monitor" is selected, then click APPLY. Once complete, this process will enable your Multiple Monitor Setup to perform seamlessly and allow you to navigate through all monitors.

7) You may see the screen flash, and the desktop should now be extended to show Dual Screens. You should get a little pop up that asks if you’d like to keep these settings. If everything looks good, click OK. If something isn’t right, click CANCEL button and try one more time from the top.

There you go! Just about everything you need to know to setup your Multiple Monitor Display. Now you can finally paste that old black lab lounging peacefully on the old wood porch (like great Grandpa had in the Ozarks of MO) as a Dual Monitor Wallpaper. Or you can even go a step further than that. It all depends on the individual as to what type of Dual Monitor Backgrounds he or she may or may not use. In a world that strives to be politically correct, it's good to know that there's a Multi-Monitor Display on your desk to show all the different colours of diversity simultaneously!

What exactly does the term “Multiple Monitors” refer to?

Multiple Monitors, also commonly known as or referred to as Multi-Screen, Multi-Screens, Multi-Monitor Display, and Multi-Monitor Displays are all synonymous terms referring to the use of more than one monitor. It may be a mystery as to how many different terms we can think of when we refer to any Dual Monitor Setup or larger to be connected to a single computer, and controlled by a single mouse and keyboard. This type of Multiple Monitor setup allows you to visually interface with more than one program at any given moment in time, as well as compare charts, and use the "copy and paste" function across a Dual Monitor Wallpaper without the need to install additional expensive and unecessaryover priced and over rated Dual Monitor Software.

When People tell me about all the great things multiple monitors has done for them, I often chuckle just a bit because they hadn't found out sooner the overall impact of Multi-Screens functionality. There's nothing like have a dual monitor wallpaper to stretch out on and relax knowing that I'm not overlooking anything. After all time is money right? Who wants to tell the boss that they spent the day shuffling through papers? Well that's more or less what is going on when you have to toggle to and fro from one window to the next, while using a single monitor computer.

It's only when someone gets a multiple monitor computer do they ever really get set free. Free from the headache of squinting eyes trying to pry through the fields of tabs or windows in the task bar. Having a multi screen application has freed me from such head trauma and I have since found the meaning of life on the Internet. It's not necessarily all about multi-tasking or even the extended ease of use that you gain when you have dual monitor software. Mainly it has given me the option to look further than I had ever gone before by giving me another window to work withI think many people would imagine a dual monitor setup to be expensive or even high tech, but in fact it really isn't all that difficult to set up and experience your favorite dual monitor backgrounds. Desktop PC's have become a staple in our home, office and for many life even. Why not go ahead and take a step forward and turn your single monitor computer into a Multi-monitor display that can add light and art to your space.

I often think of those people that use trading computers to make their living. I bet it sure is nice to sit at home and watch CNBC all day and make thousands of dollars in the process. After all when you're trading stocks on figures that already happened, at the end of the day your going to want to say that you kept up with it all. Nothing like the comfort one can experience sitting in their favorite chair at home, all while it is cold and rainy outside. No better time to have a home PC that supports multiple monitors. Having that ability to become completely consumed by the shiny glimpses of light we see on the information superhighway. When you can sit back and gaze into that abyss of ones and zero's culminating into useful bits of information produced in multi-screens. Most of the time the PC is on there's one of two things displaying. 1) our favorite picture for example, family photo, picture of Jack and Diane, Maxim screen saver, etc.. Or on the other hand you have 2) which is generally whatever you have been working on before you left the desk, which could include /but not limited to, open Internet Browser displaying news headlines or NETFLIX, Rent movies from Netflix." Now imagine that you have a dual monitor wallpaper and the panoramic view of the majestic cliffs and beaches along the US West Coast.

You can never have enough screen space, especially when organizing and working on your digital pictures. Instead of buying a larger monitor, if you're using Windows XP or later, you can buy an inexpensive second monitor and connect it to your computer—instantly doubling your work space. Flat panel LCD monitors look great and will save room on your desk; CRT monitors also work well and can be less expensive but a bit bulky.
There are several different ways you can make use of this extra screen space when working at home or in your office. If you take a lot of digital pictures, some of the advantages to having dual monitors at your work space include:
· When browsing your picture library, you can view the thumbnails on one monitor, and use the second monitor to view pictures full screen to check for proper focus and image quality.
· When editing photos, you can use one monitor to browse the pictures with Windows Explorer or a photo library program, and use the second monitor to edit the pictures with your photo-editing software.
· If you need to stay on top of your e-mail while working, you can keep your inbox open on one monitor and work on your photos on the other.
What you'll need: desktop computer
Many new desktop computers support dual monitors without requiring any additional hardware. To see if you have more than one monitor connection, look at the back of your computer for two Video Graphics Array (VGA) connectors or two Digital Visual Interface (DVI) connectors or one of each.
Most new desktop computers include two connectors to support dual monitors.
If you only have a single VGA or DVI connector, you will need to install a video adapter. You can either install a second video adapter or replace your current video adapter with one that has two VGA or DVI connections. What you'll need: laptop computer

A dual screen setup enables you to view the same image side by side.
Once your monitor is set up, you can use your mouse to grab the title bar of a window and drag it to your new display. If a window does not move when you drag it, double-click the title bar first, and then drag it. Having two monitors will forever change the way you work with your computer. Be creative and experiment with the sizing of application windows and what information you can keep in constant view while doing multiple tasks.

Multiple Windows with Dual Monitors

It's about 4:00 at the local Panera Bread coffee shop and my laptop productivity is tarnished without my typical Multi-Monitor setup at home. At least if I had a Dual Screen desktop I could have Multi-Screens open to view my tasks independant of a tab browser which really gets to me. Especially when I click on a link and it changes my tab with a half written email to my lovely lady and when I page back, I have to start all over again. That really stinks!

I remember awhile back when me a couple friends created our first Dual Monitor system. Yeah little did we know that even with Dual Monitors our cpu might go crazy and sometimes it did. Fortunately it was all well worth having Multiple Monitors any day of the week. At least with a Multiple Monitor setup multi-tasking in Multi-Screen layout allowed for shorter time spent in front of the computer. Primarily because we could surf the net so much faster and more efficiently.

Three Ways to Setup a Multi-Monitor Computer

2) You can get a USB to VGA Adapter, or USB to DVI Adapter that will allow you to add an extra monitor to your computer via any USB2.0 Port. You can also add multiple extra monitors by using multiple adapters. This is a great option for viewing documents, surfing the web, using Microsoft Office and many other business tasks. This is not a good option for intense graphical situations such as HDTV, Blu-ray, Gaming and 3D / CAD Workstation applications. For those types of scenarios, it is highly recommended that you purchase a high-powered Multi-monitor Workstation.

3) You can replace or add an extra video card to your existing computer, depending on how many monitors you wish to support. Although this sounds easy enough, this is a rather complex solution for a beginner, especially when trying to find a compatible graphics card. If you’re using Windows XP or Vista, did you know that you can configure your desktop run on multiple monitors? It’s easier than you might think, and I am going to give you step-by-step instructions on how to use this feature. The whole process should only take a few minutes. The recording computer industry isn’t new, but using multiple monitors to control Pro Tools or whatever recording software you use may save you time and create a better recording experience. Multiple Monitors (also known as Multi-Monitor, Multi-Screen, and Dual Monitors) are all synonymous terms referring to the use of more than one monitor, connected to a single computer, and controlled by a single mouse and keyboard. This type of setup allows you to visually interface with more than one program at a time, as well as compare charts, and use the “copy and paste” function across multiple screens.

Do you remember the saying "two heads are better than one"? Well, the same thing applies to monitors. By increasing the visible space on your desktop, you can highly improve your efficiency with almost any work task such as day trading, audio recording, video editing, medical imaging etc.. I have been using Multiple Monitors for years, and I have noticed a true increase in productivity, every time I upgrade to a system to support more monitors. So far I have Eight monitors on my main computer and four on my side kick pc. Many people who have never used a multi-monitor PC may not understand the true advantage of this technology, and dismiss the idea as novel. On the other hand, an individual who utilizes multiple monitors knows about the power of visualization and organization, and feels as if they have discovered a wonderful secret for business multi-tasking.

One of the most common uses for multi-monitor computers is Day Trading. That in itself is a big testament to how useful and productive you can be with multiple monitors. If the Wall Street big dogs are using them, you know it’s going to be an effective tool. In fact, using multiple monitors for stock trading is guaranteed to make you a better trader.

For Example: You can view charts on one screen and run your trading software on another. If you use more than two screens, you can watch your live news streams on a third monitor or perform internet research. You can also copy and paste across monitors, rather than maximizing and minimizing windows.

The Three main ways to Setup Multiple Monitors

This is not a good option for intense graphical situations such as HDTV, Blu-ray, Gaming and 3D / CAD Workstation applications. For those types of scenarios, it is highly recommended that you purchase a high-powered Multi-monitor Workstation.

3) You can replace or add an extra video card to your existing computer, depending on how many monitors you wish to support. Although this sounds easy enough, this is a rather complex solution for a beginner, especially when trying to find a compatible graphics card.
